Day 4

Innsbruck has so much to offer from city walks in front of the majestic alpine backdrop, to mountain hikes high above the rooftops of the regional capital. Home to two Winter Olympics, Innsbruck is a picture postcard destination for major sporting events. From the heart of the city it takes just 20 minutes to travel up to 2,000 metres above sea level using the funicular railway and cable car.

Road bike riders like us are spoiled for choice around Innsbruck. Today you have a choice of two rides, a longer ride with the challenging Kitzbüheler Horn (another bucket list climb) as the day’s finish, or a route featuring spectacular panoramic views but keeping down low with the high mountains either side of you. Take your pick depending on how the legs are feeling and spend the rest of your day recovering &/or exploring what Innsbruck has to offer.

Crossing the boarder into Italy means you’re at the top and now a long rewarding descent into Bressanone, the finish is almost in sight, but its all uphill into the Dolomites with the final climb of the day to our destination of Ortisei.

Day 6

Our Hotel Alpin Garden is simply amazing and a reason we’ve been staying here on our tours for nearly 10 years. Our host and owner Markus is as much a part of our crew as all of us, and I am sure you will feel at home here too. The meals and service are outstanding and it is very hard to leave when the time comes.

If its your first time in the Dolomites be prepared to be awed by the grandeur and spectacle of the Sella Ronda ride, a loop of four glorious passes: Passo Sella, Passo Pordoi, Passo Campolongo and Passo Gardena. If you’re not going up you’re coming down but this ride is magical and will be part of your cycling memories forever.

For those who want the challenge of ticking off more bucket list climbs we have a big option adding in the Passo Giau, Fasso Falzarego, and Valpolla. Back in time for a late lunch with Markus and a well deserved beer before dinner.

Day 7

With a long history of visiting the Dolomites we know all the best rides around! We’ve picked two different rides to challenge you in the heart of the Dolomites, but both getting you back to the Alpin Garden hotel in time for a can’t miss late lunch.

Ride 1 will take you over Passo Pini then down through Castlerotto and onto the steep and long Passo Nigra. Descending Passo Costalungo we head up to Canazei before taking the left turn onto Passo Sella and descending back to Alpin Garden.

Ride 2 takes you over Passo Sella and Passo Pordoi to Arabba, and from there we continue descending to Caprile. The next part of the ride starts steep and does not stop. Passo Fedia is a tough climb but rewarding once reaching the lake at the top. From here there’s one more climb to get over before getting back for lunch. Passo Pordoi is a pleasant climb out of Canazei but ramps up on tired legs when we turn off for the 6km up the Sella. However once over the top from its 16kms of down hill back to the hotel.

Departing Ortisei today your decision on how much climbing you’re up for will determine your ride option today. Our shorter option begins with a short climb over Passo Pini, then descends through Castlerotto and down into the town of Bolzano. The harder option takes us back over the Sella and then over Passo Costalungo before a very long descent into Bolzano; both rides then follow the gradual downhill on bike paths through the vineyards to our destination Merano.

Day 9

Today is a day off. Sleep in and enjoy the many things to do in Merano. Thermal baths, shopping, cafes, bars and beautiful gardens to explore.

Enjoy your day off and refresh ahead of a big day tomorrow.

Then its time to tackle the infamous Stelvio Pass: 48 hairpins and 1,550m of hurtical over 25km gets us over the highest pass in Italy, before we’re rewarded with 23km down hill run into Bormio. It’s a scenic ride and the Stelvio is both fun and challenging, but equally achievable for riders of all ability.

That’s the climbing done for the day with it all down hill back to Bormio. This is a ride our tours are famous for - it’s EPIC!
